Saturday,
June 23, 2007, or the first night after summer solstice, we
celebrate San Juan Bautista, a tradition that began in Spain.
In Spain, people walk over hot coals in their bare feet to honor
Saint John the Baptist (San Juan Bautista). In Puerto Rico the
entire island of able bodies moves to the nearest beach and parties
until midnight. At the stroke of 12 everyone walks into the Atlantic
or Caribbean Ocean and throws themselves backwards into the waves
three times to bring good luck. This is my 20th event.

After a long and amazingly
varied career—teacher, lawyer and physicist—to mention
a few, National
Trust member Ed Collins uses his San Juan, PR cigar company
to promote historic preservation. He operates out of a 450-year-old
office building (yes, tours are given) and maintains a detailed
history of his industry generally and Puerto Rico specifically
on his company’s website. Our
conversation touched on biology, history, economics and sociology.
